The entire Charleston community is grieving after the loss of nine City of Charleston firefighters who died Monday, June 18th fighting a devastating blaze at a furniture store.
Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. said the City is grateful for the thousands of calls, letters, cards and e-mails received from across the nation expressing condolences and offering assistance.
During a memorial service held Friday, June 22nd at North Charleston Coliseum, more than 10,000 people gathered to honor the nine lost heroes, including representatives from more than 700 fire departments across the United States and Canada. Prior to the service, approximately 300 emergency service vehicles from throughout the state and nation, including 250 fire trucks and fire service vehicles, traveled a 15-mile procession from downtown Charleston to the Coliseum to honor the fallen heroes.
