Thoroughfare Design Standards
The City of Charleston is in the process of revising the design standards for all future public streets (“thoroughfares”).By implementing contextual design standards, new thoroughfares will be functional and safe and will incorporate a variety of mobility options (pedestrian, bicycle, vehicle and transit). The new standards focus on creating neighborhood-scale streets that include requirements for sidewalks, bicycle provisions, transit accommodations, vehicle lane widths and many other details that combine to make-up a good urban street.
Rick Hall, the City engineering consultant, presented the proposed street standards at the July meeting of Planning Commission. His presentation slides can be viewed below.
