Low Country Lawn Mower Exchange

Lawn Mower Exchange - Do Your Part to Help Mow Down Pollution!

Thanks everyone for making the first Lowcountry Lawn Mower Exchange a success. 147 electric lawn mowers were sold and over 200 gas powered lawn mowers were recycled!

We hear a lot these days about the impact of fossil fuels on the environment. Mobile sources such as cars and trucks are the single biggest source of air pollution in South Carolina. However, “off-road” sources such as gas-powered lawn mowers contribute to air pollution as well.

And the winner is.....
Michael Porter. Michael won a 14” Neuton mower!

Did you know?
In the hour it takes you to mow your lawn, your gas-powered lawn mower produces as much air pollution as driving a car 200 miles!

An estimated 17 million gallons of gasoline are spilled refueling lawn equipment in the U.S. every year, releasing harmful fumes into the air and contaminating our ground water.

What can you do?
Trade in your gasoline-powered mower for a new cordless electric mower at a discounted price. It’s better for you and better for the environment! There’s no exhaust and no noise.
Electric mowers require very little maintenance. Also, there is no oil or gas to mix, no sparkplug to replace, and no air filter to clean.
Electric Mowers are better for air quality, and they are...
Lightweight
Easy to start
Quiet
Easy to Maintain
Less Polluting
Inexpensive to Operate

See the link below to find out more about Neuton electric lawn mowers.

DHEC is teaming up with local governments and other partners around the state to provide cordless electric mowers to local residents at a discount. We’ll even collect your gas-powered mower and recycle it! You get to unload your old, polluting mower with no harm done to the environment, you get to buy a cordless electric mower for over 25% off the suggested retail price, and you never have to breathe gasoline fumes while cutting grass again. It’s a win-win situation!

All subsidized mowers are available on a first-come first served basis. Once those supplies are gone, remaining mowers will be sold at the voucher price. This is a one day opportunity.

Questions and Answers
Q. How are electric powered lawn mowers healthier?

A. Mowing on hot days with a gas mower adds to ground level pollution and can cause breathing problems.
April 1st is the beginning of the ozone season and pollution from lawn mowers is a significant contributor to ground level ozone formation. Ozone formation aggravates people with respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis and inhibits healthy breathing.

Q. How much pollution comes from gas lawn mowers?

A. There are more than 30 million lawn mowers in the U.S. Gas lawn mowers create 5% of the air pollution in the U.S. Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Q. Can I recycle my old mower?

A. At most of the DHEC-sponsored Lawn Mower Exchange events, you will have the option of trading in your old gas-powered lawn mower and we will properly recycle it for you, free of charge. If you are interested in recycling other types of powered lawn and garden tools or other materials, please contact your local recycling office. They can be converted into raw material for use in cleaner equipment and other products.

Q. What size lawn mower do I need?

A. The Neuton cordless lawn mowers that are available for the South Carolina 2009 Lawn Mower Exchange Events can be seen here.
The 19 “ or CE 6.2 is ideal for lawns up to 1/3 acre (about 15,000 sq. ft.) on a single charge. If you need more time, just drop in an optional spare battery and keep mowing!
The 14” or CE 5 is perfect for lawns up to ¼ acre on a single charge.
If you need more time, just drop in an optional spare battery.
