SAVED AND SUSTAINABLE: an Exhibition on the Restoration of 93 and 97 Broad Street
Charleston Civic Design Center: 85 Calhoun Street Charleston SC 29401
The Charleston Civic Design Center is pleased to present this exhibition on the restoration of 93 and 97 Broad Street. This exhibition features the work involved in sustainably renovating and retrofitting Charleston’s historic structures as exemplified in the work that Meadors Construction has done These two historic properties in downtown Charleston previously sat vacant and deteriorating until Meadors Construction acquired them and came up with a plan that not only restored these buildings to their former historic beauty but also improved them to fit the USGBC’s LEED sustainable standard.
These two properties show us that almost any building, even those in terrible condition, can be saved and that you don’t have to compromise the historic character of a building to meet a more sustainable standard. They also demonstrate the ways in which the preservation of historic materials can be one of the most sustainable building strategies.
According to Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., “The remarkable restoration of these two important buildings in this city show the possibility that, not only bringing a building back to beauty and usefulness is attainable but that this restoration with sustainable techniques and materials sets a new standard for future restoration. We are proud to welcome these buildings back into the inventory of historic buildings.”
This free exhibit will be on display at the Charleston Civic Design Center (85 Calhoun Street) Monday through Friday 9:00am-5:00pm, October 15-November 12, 2009.
