The New City Challenge
The Civic Design Center's City Challenge, a youth educational program, is being transformed into a game of strategy, city building, and urban design. The new City Challenge is a fun, educational experience that will introduce young people to the basic concepts of urban design: How a city gets made and what makes a city successful. The program gives the students the opportunity to develop a sensitivity to and appreciation of their own communities by learning what it is that in fact creates a sense of place in the city. The new City Challenge game has teams competing against each other to form the best urban design of a 184 acre parcel of land on the Charleston peninsula. Using Legos, the students actively build out their own cities responding to a variety of different urban design principles and real world scenarios.
The program will begin to be offered in the Spring of 2008. If your organization is interested in partnering with us for a City Challenge, or if you are an individual who is interested in the program, please contact the Civic Design Center at (843) 958-6416.
