Old mattress factory christened as new research center
645 Meeting Street
Sep 24, 2008

Groundbreaking will be March 9th for the joint rehabilitation of the former mattress factory on Meeting Street, a process which will transform it into a state of the art incubator space for biotech research in the Charleston Area.

The activities of this incubator will reinforce the City’s efforts to grow the knowledge-based job sector through the Charleston Digital Corridor and its activities and programs. It is anticipated that the research performed here will help advance spin-off business activity, helping to further promote the economic growth of the knowledge-based employment cluster, one of the healthiest sector’s of our local economy.

As a research incubator and laboratory facility, this project will continue the City’s commitments in the Cooper River Bridge Community Mitigation Partnership Agreement by bringing significant economic development benefit, both with financial investment and job creation. Furthermore, the jobs created will provide higher than normal wages, and will demonstrate to this community the opportunity to participate in the 21st Century economy.

This project also provides for a sublease of improved space available to the City for the purposes of a new Police Substation and Community Meeting Facility. These spaces will bring immediate and ongoing benefits to the surrounding neighborhood. Altogether, this facility will become a centerpiece of the East Central Neighborhood, and will attract new investments to continue the enhancement of this area.
