Clean City Clara Wants to Come to Your School!
Clean City Clara, Keep Charleston Beautiful's pelican mascot, reached over 3,000 elementary students in Charleston County during the 2008-2009 school year.Clean City Clara is Keep Charleston Beautiful's pelican mascot whose purpose is to teach children the importance of living a litter-free life. When Clara goes to visit a school, excitement about picking up litter is sure to follow! Through an interactive presentation, students help each other learn why litter is dangerous to pelicans, humans, and the environment. They also learn what they can do to help cleanup and prevent litter. During the presentation, our instructor entertains and engages students through questions and calling on volunteers. The students act out the "Story of Clara" for their friends. Throughout the program Clara (a volunteer in a pelican suit) pops in and out of view helping children better understand how litter can impact pelicans and other wildlife. At the end of the program, Clara comes out to lead the students through the Kids Club Pledge and to teach them her secret silly song.
Clara's Kids Club Pledge:
"I promise not to litter, I promise to tell others not to litter and I promise to pick up litter (even if it’s not mine)."
This wonderful education program is available for free to all schools (public and private) within Charleston County during the Fall semester. The presentation is geared to K-2 students but can be adapted for older and younger students as well. To register for a presentation, contact Keep Charleston Beautiful or complete the attached request form.
