SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics)
This unit is deployed in situations of high risk including felony and drug search warrants, hostage situations, and barricaded suspects. The Charleston Police Department’s SWAT team consistently wins awards in competitions. They make use of numerous armored vehicles and are trained in the use of both conventional firearms and also “less-than-lethal” devices like bean-bag guns and Tasers.
The SWAT Team was formed in 1982 with 12 members whose purpose it was to respond to any crisis event in or around the city of Charleston. Each team member had a primary obligation within the police department (e.g., Patrol, Detectives, Traffic, etc.) and their SWAT status was considered a collateral duty assignment. Over the last 23 years this “collateral duty” status has not changed, however the team’s size, its mission and the organizational structure has grown considerably. The SWAT Team’s primary purpose is to perform Hostage Rescue, as well as respond to incidents involving Barricaded Subject(s) or Active Shooters. They are also trained to perform High Risk Warrant Service and Dignitary/VIP protection.
The SWAT Team trains a minimum of three days a month and focuses on areas that include; Team Building, Team Movement, Building Entry, Waterborne Operations, Vessel Boarding, Vehicle Assault, Active Shooter, Rappelling, PT, Gas/Munitions, as well as Scenario Based Training, utilizing the Simunition-based weapons training system. Throughout the year the SWAT Team will also cross-train with other special units within the Charleston Police Department including; the Environment Response Unit, Bomb Squad, Harbor Patrol and Crisis Negotiators Team. The SWAT Team also trains with outside agencies including; Charleston County Sheriff’s Office SWAT, Mount Pleasant Police Department SWAT as well as the Charleston County EMS TEMS Team.
The SWAT Team also competes in annual SWAT Competitions in both Orlando, Florida and Spartanburg, SC.
