Mounted Horse Patrol
The Mounted Patrol Unit works daily patrolling parks and neighborhoods in Downtown Charleston. They are also included in ceremonies and Police Funerals.Horse Patrol is a full-time unit operating from Police Stables adjacent to Hampton Park. This unit attracts positive attention wherever they go. The mounted horse patrol is community policing at its best. Their high visibility and ability to patrol difficult areas, such as parks, make this unit ideal for crime prevention. The mounted patrol also serves as a valuable community relation’s tool because of the non-aggressive perception of horses. It also allows positive interaction with the public, which benefits all police officers. The mounted patrol trains extensively to deal with many different routine patrol needs as well as crowd control situations.
The Horse Patrol is regularly deployed to Mardi-Gras celebrations, performs demonstrations, and their services are offered to agencies in South Carolina and neighboring states to assist in Police Funeral services. In 2004 They assisteed with security for the G-8 Summit.
